Listener Feedback

I just wanted to reach out to you to tell you how much I appreciate your podcast and the experience Russ and I had at LFTN in 2023. Meeting you, John, and Amanda has really changed our lives for the better. We are doing great things on our farm- I even planted tomatoes in our Dutch bucket system that we have in our greenhouse! I am so stoked to see how things grow and what we can harvest this fall.

Your My 3 Things is something that I use daily in order to help me keep things running smoothly on the farm as I work from home. I finished the first year of my program in herbalism and nutrition and am about to start off my second year. It has been so amazing and I was inspired to do better for my family and community through listening to your podcast.

Keep up the amazing work and I look forward to learning more from you.

Weekly Shopping Report

Dollar Tree: The food coolers are in decent shape; all are working and probably 60%-75% full.

Home Depot: A 2x4x8 is $3.65, same as last week.

Aldi: There was very little milk; I hadn’t been paying attention, but this time noticed that instead of three full racks of half and full gallons of actual milk plus a couple of varieties with nutritional content removed (2% and 1%), there were perhaps a couple of half-racks with gallons of whole milk and only a little of the fake stuff; few if any half-gallons. There was also only one rack of eggs. Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.35; eggs: $2.42 (+); whole milk: $2.89; heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.45; butter: $3.79; bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $4.49; sugar: $2.99; flour: $2.35; and 80% lean ground beef: $3.79. In the meat area, the coolers were full but not stuffed.

Gas: A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599.

Frugality Tip

Our vision changes throughout our lives. Some of us need glasses, some of us need multiple glasses, or progressive lenses. Sometimes these cost a lot of money at eyeglass stores. Zenni optical is where I buy my glasses. Single prescription glasses start around $8. I have a pair of polarized prescription sunglasses that I paid $20 for and progressive lens glasses start at $38. So grab your prescription(s) and your Pupillary Distance (the distance in millimeters (mm) between the center of one pupil to the center of the other). And check out Zenni.com. they even have a try on feature.

Happy saving y’all

Main topic of the Show: You Can’t Unsee It

A friend of mine posted some thoughts on the coming election. Her perspective was that if you live in a state where 70% or more of the votes will go D or R no matter who is running, there is no reason to vote “against” the dominant party mathematically if you like neither candidate.

She’s right.

And therein lies the rub really: the word lead.

And in those processed lie the true power and control – less so the people “overseeing them”.

The funny part is there are different reactions to seeing it:

  • Denial
  • Angler
  • Negotiation
  • Mourning

And then there is our friend acceptance.

But the fight changes after you see it because you know a few things.

  1. Realistic impact (your role)
  2. Embarrassment is a better tool than force
  3. Mostly, it doesnt matter unless you can physically make a change because you get one step forward here – two steps backward there

And that back and forth is the distraction.

Make it a great week!

Weekly Shopping Report

Home Depot this weekend, the online price of a 2x4x8 has gone up, to $3.65.

Aldi. We found everything we wanted. Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.35; eggs: $2.25; whole milk: $2.89 (+); heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.45; butter: $3.79; bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $4.49; sugar: $2.99; flour: $2.35; and 80% lean ground beef: $3.79.

Food City: They had a decent amount of raw Tennessee honey, including some quart jars, which we prefer. They were $14.99, which if I remember correctly, may be a dollar higher than the last time some months ago.

A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599.

Main topic of the Show: Winter Is Coming, Are You Ready?

It’s hot, but there is a certain crispness in the evening air. The past two nights, I have even been able to sleep without any AC and the windows open. With the garden at peak production, which is not the usual flush this year, my mind wanders to the winter months.

The old timers are already talking about how hard this one will be based on caterpillars, and other signs. They do this every year.

Getting ready NOW for the coming winter is really what summer on a homestead is all about.

Today we talk about the #myThreeThings method of personal and life planning and how it can be used through hard times to help you choose the most important things. We also cover a pantry update, the weekly shopping report, operation independence and more.

UPDATE FROM Fountain.fm
Doggonit Girl – A True Cook With What You Have Moment
I listened to this twice. Love the format. I made a version of the tomato soup. Thank you for reminding me that the garden is so tasty. I found the solution to too much trombocino. I just had a baby Muscovy deficiency. They are like a school of pirahna on the seed ball end. I quarter it. They get two quarters twice a day. I have very little rind left. Grated trombocino and the tomato soup, with an immersion blender makes quite the hearty soup. Too much habanero! Bring out the sour cream.

Weekly Shopping Report From Joe
We went into Dollar Tree for the first time in quite a while this Friday. The food coolers were decently stocked. I didn’t see any big changes.

Home Depot price online of a 2x4x8 is still $3.48.

Aldi. I’ve seen a few new faces in there, both stocking shelves and at the registers. Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): 1.35 (+); eggs: $2.46 (-); whole milk: $2.86 (-); heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.45; butter: $3.79 (+); bacon: $3.99; potatoes: $4.49; sugar: $2.99; flour: $2.35; and 80% lean ground beef: $3.79.

Rural King. Sonia thought there were a number of empty shelves around, primarily in the livestock area.

A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.599.

Main topic of the Show: #My3Things For Difficult Times

We haven’t talked about My3Things in awhile

I mean, that is why we build the life we choose on our terms, right?

NEW FOLKS: What #My3Things is
Best practice: Include Family and Establish Consensus

Tips for #my3things success in hard time
10 minutes a day to re-evaluate the Big Picture and what has changed
My 1 Three Thing
Time method versus completion method
ROI on time and outsourcing
No Kill List
Using the areas of focus to keep good care of yourself and those around you
Listen closely to your body
Redefining weekends and days

Do I do the worksheet every day? (What I really really do)

All in all:
What would happen without #my3things
What has declined
The garden production
Spending more $ so the budget is tighter
Number of events and meetups
Declutter Project
R & D time
Speaking engagements and interviews
Tired

What has gone well
Knowing WHAT to outsource so that I can
Keeping focus on the important over the urgent – but usually addressing the urgent
Preventing things that need not go wrong
